Distressed swimmer swims away from rescuer


On October 18 at 5:47 AM, Burlington Fire Department was dispatched to a reported water rescue north of the dock at 2 College St., BFD reported recently.


Firefighters found a female in distress about 30 feet from the dock. US Coast Guard Station Burlington deployed a boat to assist BFD. 


A rescue swimmer from BFD Tower 1 entered the water and quickly reached the patient who attempted to swim away from the rescuer. The rescue swimmer was able to secure the patient and place a water rescue harness around her as the shore support team rapidly pulled them to the dock where EMS companies began evaluating the patient. She was transported to UVMMC in stable condition. 


Montpelier PD makes arrests after aggravated assault with knife


On October 17 at 3:22 PM, the Montpelier Police Department received multiple reports of an ongoing physical altercation involving a knife and over a dozen people on the bike path along Shaw’s Supermarket on Main Street in Montpelier. 


MPD and Vermont Capitol Police Officers arrived on scene and separated the involved parties, quickly determining through witness accounts the armed suspect, identified as Teiontay J. Braxton (age 45), transient. 


Police say Braxton had been displaying violent and tumultuous behavior in the public space which led to a physical altercation where Braxton brandished a knife at another party. 


Prior to police arriving, an acquaintance of Braxton’s, Jessica S. Atwood (age 45), transient, took the knife and hid it in a nearby storm drain in an attempt to conceal or destroy evidence.

Braxton and Atwood were transported to MPD for processing where a Vermont Superior Court Judge was contacted who set bail in the amount of $6000 for Braxton and $5000 for Atwood.


Braxton was transported and lodged at the Northeast Regional Correctional Facility in St. Johnsbury for lack of bail. Atwood was transported to the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility in South Burlington for lack of bail.


Braxton will face the charges of Aggravated Assault, Aggravated Disorderly Conduct, and Reckless Endangerment and Atwood the charge of Accessory to Aggravated Assault after the Fact.


Medicaid fraud


A Barton woman is in hot water for allegedly defrauding Vermont Medicaid of over $18,000 in public health care funds, the Newport Dispatch reports. 


Katrina LaFoe, 44, of Barton was arraigned on three counts of felony Medicaid fraud, as announced by the Vermont Attorney General’s Office.


LaFoe of Barton pleaded not guilty to charges of impermissibly billing Medicaid for services allegedly provided by another.


The charges stem from an investigation by the Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud and Residential Abuse Unit (MFRAU) and the Office of the Inspector General (OIG).


Judge Benjamin Battles, presiding in Vermont Superior Court, Orleans Criminal Division, ordered conditions of release requiring LaFoe to maintain contact with the court and counsel and to attend all further proceedings.


Authorities encourage anyone suspecting abuse of the Vermont Medicaid program to contact Vermont Adult Protective Services at 800-564-1612 and MFRAU through the state’s official website.


Fight breaks out over food in fridge


Burlington Police responded to a fight between two females at a Howard Center residence on King Street. This location has many people residing there and is staffed by Howard Center employees.



The incident happened in the morning on October 17 when police received a call about a fight with audible screaming in the background of the phone call.


Police arrived on the scene and identified Moyium Willomon as the primary instigator after she attempted to steal food from the fridge that belonged to another resident. When confronted, Willomon is alleged to have assaulted the victim which was witnessed by a staff member.


When a worker attempted to communicate with Willomon about the incident, she refused to engage. Then when the worker turned around to walk away, Willomon rushed at him and punched him. Officers intervened and detained WiIllomon.


Willomon was arrested. Police are recommending charges of Simple Assault and Disorderly Conduct. Willomon has a previous kidnapping arrest.
