Police have identified the victims in the November 15 murder of two people at a residence on Gallison Hill in Montpelier.
Police have officially confirmed that the individuals murdered were the parents of the primary suspect, Matthew Gomes, 29, of Montpelier. Gomes was arraigned on aggravated murder charges Monday in Superior Court in Montpelier.
They are identified as Jerry Gomes, 77, and Mary Gomes, 60. They are the parents of suspect Matthew Gomes.
Autopsies determined the cause of their deaths was blunt force trauma, and the manner of the deaths was homicide. Matthew Gomes is a Montpelier High and Castleton State College graduate and a former semi-pro football player for the Vermont Ravens.
According to a gofundme site launched by his mother, he suffered a head injury in 2022 that resulted in mental and physical deterioration.
Barre man arrested for luring a child
Vermont State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigations have arrested Joel Bonano, 32, of Barre for sexual assault of a minor.
The alleged incident occurred on January 20, 2023 at 17 Plain Street Apt. 3 in Barre City. Investigations revealed that Bonano had sexually assaulted a female at the residence who was under the age of 16.
On November 18, Bonano turned himself in at Berlin Barracks. He was fingerprinted, photographed and issued a citation to appear at the Washington Superior Court Criminal Division on December 12 to answer to the charges of Sexual Assault, Luring a Child and Contributing to Juvenile Delinquency. He was subsequently released.
Man arrested for multiple thefts in Enosburg
Brett Langdell, 29, of Enosburg was taken into custody for a burglary on November 18. The incident occurred at night on Main St.
Police say Langdell broke through a window and burglarized Modern Touch Salon in the town of Enosburg. The only item he stole was money, presumably in a cash register.
He was located shortly thereafter and taken into custody. After some further investigation, they also found that he had also stolen a purse belonging to another Enosburg resident from a car parked on Main St.
Police say he stole the purse from inside after forcing his way into the vehicle. The purse contained debit cards and cash, which was returned to its original owner.
Langdell was taken to the State Police Barracks in St. Albans for processing. Langdell was lodged at Northwest State Correctional Facility on $1,000 bail and issued a citation to appear in Franklin County Criminal Court on November 19.
