Twelve different Vermont schools targeted by false reports of shootings

WATERBURY — An investigation is underway after a hoax threat targeted 12 schools across Vermont on Tuesday with false reports of shootings.

The incident began around 6:30pm on Monday, April 7, when Vermont State Police were alerted to an anonymous user who had made threats through the Department of Defense Self Helpline chat function. The individual referenced several middle and high schools across the state.
Police say the nature of the threats was consistent with past hoax and swatting campaigns. All threats were deemed unfounded.
The schools targeted include:
Middlebury Union High School
Mt. Abraham High School (Bristol)
Vergennes High School
Arlington Memorial High School
Burr and Burton Academy (Manchester)
Long Trail School (Dorset)
Mt. Anthony Union High School (Bennington)
Burke Mountain Academy (East Burke)
Danville School
Hazen Union High School (Hardwick)
Lyndon Institute
St. Johnsbury Academy
Law enforcement increased patrols around the affected schools Tuesday morning. No suspicious activity has been reported.
State and federal agencies are working together on the investigation. No further information is available at this time.
Brighton woman wanted after threats, false report, and stalking
Vermont State Police are searching for a woman accused of making threats, stalking a resident, and filing a false police report.

Troopers say 50-year-old Kimberly Crosson made multiple threatening videos targeting 40-year-old Kevin Bickford of Brighton. She also reportedly submitted a false complaint to the Essex County Sheriff’s Department.
Police say Crosson's current whereabouts are unknown. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Derby Barracks at 802-334-8881 or leave an anonymous tip at vsp.vermont.gov/tipsubmit.
Dog stolen from Lyndon yard in broad daylight
Vermont State Police are investigating a theft that occurred around 4:45pm on Monday, April 7, on Sheldon Brook Road.

According to the victim, Eric Wyatt, 49, of Lyndon, an unknown individual pulled up in a vehicle, exited, and stole Wyatt’s 9-year-old Black and Tan Coonhound directly from the front lawn. The person then fled the scene.

Vergennes man arrested for license violation and interlock restriction
A traffic stop led to the arrest of a Vergennes man for driving with a criminally suspended license and violating interlock device requirements.
On Monday, April 7, at approximately 6:07pm, Vermont State Police pulled over 39-year-old Trevor B. Matton on U.S. Route 7 near Little Chicago Road for a motor vehicle violation.

Matton was found to be operating a vehicle without a required ignition interlock device and with a criminally suspended license. He was transported to the New Haven Barracks for processing and later released on citation.
He is scheduled to appear in Addison County Superior Court on June 2, 2025.
